Thinking about reinstalling your WordPress theme? If you are having trouble with using the theme, it might be a good idea to do so. But, before you reinstall a WordPress theme, go through the following list, to see if you have a solid reason for reinstalling.
We would suggest you reinstall a WordPress theme if you suspect the following issues:
- You have encountered missing or corrupted files within a theme.
- You believe your theme has skipped an individual update.
- There is a PHP error that prevents you from accessing your WordPress Administration panel (WordPress Dashboard).
- Your theme is not functioning correctly.
- You believe the theme has been hacked or infected with malware.
If you are sure it’s time to reinstall your theme, start by backing up panel settings and content. And remember: you can reinstall any theme only if you didn’t edit the core theme file or added any custom files in the theme folder.
There are two methods you can use to reinstall a theme:
Method 1: Reinstalling a WordPress theme using the WordPress Administration panel
Before you decide to reinstall a WordPress theme using the WP Admin panel, you will need to download the theme you wish to reinstall. Once you download it, the theme .zip file will be saved to the Downloads folder.
Here are the steps you need to go through to reinstall a theme within your WordPress Admin Panel:
1. Log in to the WordPress Admin panel (WordPress Dashboard).
2. Navigate to Appearance → Themes → Add new.
3. Click the Upload theme link to upload the latest theme from the .zip file.
4. Activate the theme.
5. Click the Replace current with uploaded button.
Method 2: Reinstalling a WordPress theme using an FTP client
You can reinstall a theme using your FTP client (such as FileZilla). To do so, be sure to follow these steps:
1. Download the theme you wish to reinstall. The .zip file will be saved to your Downloads folder.
2. Move the .zip file to your Desktop. Extract the file.
3. Connect to your web space using an FTP client and browse to wp-content/theme folder.
4. Back up your existing theme folder. You can delete this folder if you have not modified the theme files.
5. Drag the freshly downloaded theme folder from your Desktop to the themes directory.
6. Log in to the WordPress Admin panel (WordPress Dashboard).
7. Navigate to Appearance → Themes. The theme should still be active.
8. Click on the thumbnail to view the Theme Details and verify the most recent version number.
Reinstalling a WordPress theme is fairly easy to do. But what if you want to reinstall a specific version of a theme? No problem! Just go through these steps:
1. Log in to the WordPress Admin panel (WordPress Dashboard).
2. Navigate to Dashboard → Changelogs (Activity logs) to find the theme’s version history. All the theme change logs are structured as .txt files. If the theme version is not visible in the Changelogs, navigate to Appearance → Themes and click on the active theme to check the theme’s version.
3. Once you find the version number you want to reinstall, download the theme .zip file manually.
4. After you download the theme .zip file, navigate to Appearance → Themes → Add new to upload the theme .zip file.
5. Click the Replace current with uploaded button. And that’s it一you have successfully reinstalled a theme version.
